It’s been an exciting month, with children creating special gifts for Mothers’ Day as well as a fantastic turn out for our movie night. It was great to see everyone and for educators to meet many whānau members for the first time. We will definitely be planning more family events during the year!
Each day, please remember:
– Warm clothing and hats (many children are without hats each day)
– Several changes of clothing
– Name everything
– Return your Storypark questionnaire as soon as possible
Signing in It is very important that children are signed in and out each day, as the sign in sheet is also our roll call list. In an emergency staff and emergency services will need to know who is at preschool.
Entertainment Book To all those who have already purchased an Entertainment Book, thank you for supporting our fundraising efforts. If you’d like to know what vouchers are included, a sample book can be found next to the sign in sheets in the office. To purchase your book or app, please see a staff member or access the link through the centre Facebook page.
Spare clothes We are in need of spare undies, leggings & trousers please, if you have any your child has outgrown. Also, if your child has gone home in preschool clothing, please return these.
Resources The centre would hugely appreciate donations of open-ended resources e.g. cardboard tubes, dress ups, capes, fabric, boxes etc

Matariki begins 15 June this year!
This waiata/song follows the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and names each star that makes up the Matariki cluster. Some refer to the stars being the sisters of Matariki, while others (as in this waiata) consider them to be her children.

What’s for lunch?
Easy Healthy Chicken Nuggets from www.mykidslickthebowl.com
500g boneless chicken*
1 cup coconut milk
1 cup ground almonds (almond meal)
*Breast, tenderloins or thighs all work fine.
Optional: Season the ground almonds with whatever you like (e.g. salt, pepper, garlic powder, chilli, Cajun spices, mixed herbs, parmesan cheese etc)
- Cut chicken into bite sized pieces.
- Soak in coconut milk. If possible leave the chicken to soak in fridge for 30 mins or overnight (although however long you have is fine).
- Drain the excess coconut milk.
- Roll the chicken piece in ground almonds.
- Place on baking-paper lined tray.
- Bake in a hot oven (200C or 390F) for 15 – 20 minutes (cooking time will depend on size of pieces).
Turn the pieces once golden on one side (usually after 10 mins cooking time). The side that is sitting on the baking paper will be the side going brown. Turning helps to make both sides golden and crispy.
Te rūma Toitoi’s programme continues to be based around exploration. We have recently enjoyed exploring paint, particularly through our ANZAC Day and Mother’s Day creations.
A big card board box was gifted to our room and this has caused much excitement amongst the children who are enthusiastically exploring it in their own ways. This has included crawling and walking through it, hitting it to listen to the nose it creates, as well as sitting inside and socially interacting in the dark with peers!

We would gratefully accept any spare gumboots and rain jackets that your child may have grown out of.

Our current programme is based around supporting the children’s creative dispositions as they explore, and experiment with a range of resources.
There have been strong interests evident in the room, including sensory play, role play, music construction and physical play. The children have been demonstrating their creativity and imaginations as they explore these experiences.

The Horoeka room is currently focusing on exploration. Educators plan to provide experiences that will involve sensory exploration of all the senses – taste, smell, touch etc. Open-ended resources will be provided, allowing the children to create and explore various uses for them. We will be taking walks in the community, so children will require adequate footwear, jackets and hats for these occasions.
The Kauri room’s current programme is focused on supporting children’s creative dispositions. This creativity continues to be highlighted throughout the Kauri room environment, with creative play and activities taking place daily.
